VINCVLVM | Cveto Maršič

Nuova Galleria Morone presents VINCVLVM, a solo exhibition by Cveto Maršič, a Slovenian artist whose practice is rooted in a profound and tangible relationship with the earth, matter, and time.

Vincvlvm, Latin for “bond” or “connection”, describes a relationship that runs through Maršič’s experiences, places, and memories: the land where he was born and the land where he lives, gesture, music, vine cultivation, and the time of transformation. Everything settles, overlaps, and resurfaces in his painting.

For Maršič, the earth is therefore not a landscape to be represented, but an original matter with which to engage: it can be worked, traversed, and cared for, yet it retains a resistance of its own. From this tension between intervention and autonomy emerges his physical and rhythmic painterly gesture, in which the body becomes the medium between experience and surface.

The works are constructed through layers of colour, marks, and writing. Each new layer covers what came before without entirely erasing it: words and traces re-emerge from the matter, like what time cannot completely bury. The painting thus becomes a form of sedimentation, where different experiences and thoughts accumulate and, through their encounter, produce a new reality. The landscapes that emerge within the works are therefore not images to be reproduced, but traces of embodied experiences and deep memories.

Cveto Maršič (1960, Koper, Slovenia) studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Ljubljana. His practice focuses on painting and drawing, with performance and land art playing a key role in his creative process. He exhibits primarily in Italy, Germany, and Spain, and his works are held in numerous public and private collections, including Es Baluard (Palma de Mallorca), IVAM (Valencia), Fondation Morat (Freiburg), the European Investment Bank, and Fundación ARCO.
